Euclid Airbnb Week 2: Demo Days

Demo week is done! I think we got through it in good shape. We had only a few unwelcome discoveries. It looks like at one point in time the sink leaked and caused some water damage and mold. We decided to move the kitchen sink and remove the drywall behind it, just to play it safe. There is a silver lining though; To access the space better, Kasey took down the overhead cabinets and it turns out we really liked how it opened up the kitchen space. We decided we are going to tile the entire wall and do floating shelves in place of the over sink cabinets. The sink was also built out 4 inches to allow for cabinet space, so we will gain 4 inches of room back!

But wait! We’re not done yet! We had some more bad news in the bathroom. The 2x4s behind the tile in the shower were completely dry rotted at the base. We will have to replace them all. Luckily for us, they aren’t load bearing, they were just there to support the tile. Kasey redid some sketch wiring and had to take out a bathroom fan just blowing into the floor rafters.

While the demo discoveries definitely added to the list, to be honest, its exactly what we expected. You really just don’t know when you’re popping the lid off of things and you have to be flexible.

WEEK 2: Demo Week

  • Remove carpet (a lovely maroon polyester blend from the early 1980’s) and assess the flooring options (sometimes you might find drains, or the concrete below could be cracked and uneven, this might change our approach to the floor)
  • Measure and order flooring
  • This also means we have to move a fridge somewhere
  • Rip down tile and shower partition in bathroom Remove toilet and sink
  • Take out the very gross counter top from the kitchen area . Yikes we found water damage and mold.
  • Deal with mold and water damage.. Remove all drywall and wood affected. This also meant moving and taking down the entire steel cabinet
  • Remove the bulk head that was over the stove
  • Clean out the very retro steel and porcelain kitchen sink/ cabinets. The cabinets will need to be stripped and repainted, but we will save this one for later
  • Repaint the walls that are not being demo’ed, aka the stone foundation.
  • Add plugs to on either side of the bed at night stand level
  • Paint the drop ceiling cross members white (currently black)
  • Prep for flooring
  • Order the tile, the fixtures and possibly the toilet for the bathroom
  • Add the insulation back to the ceiling
  • Find doors, check out construction junction

Note: The underlined items were things that were added to the list or moved from another week

Demo Week Walk Through

Carpets are out!
The kitchen sink, as you can see is not where it was. The sink will be going back into the same position once the wall is put back. The tile back splash was also removed.
The moldy drywall was removed and cleaned. You can see where the overhead cabinet was, we are going to keep this more open and do shelves instead of putting it back. The sink will go back to where it was once its all back together,
The little office lounge. Don’t fret, the toilet isn’t getting a new place, just there for the time being.
Do you remember when I said it would get worse before it gets better? Well, this is the ‘worse’ part. You can see the dark spots in the shower, that are dry rotted. We will be replacing those 2x4s. No more pink tile though!

Tile and Floor Selection

On this list this week was to pick out and order the tile and flooring. A lot of what we are getting is from home depot. We are just going for a bright and clean look.

Bathroom Floor
(33 ft2)

Bathroom Walls
(137 ft2)

Kitchen Back-splash Wall
(36 ft2)

Main Flooring,
Bamboo
(450 ft2)

Antique Door, $35 from Construction Junction for the Bathroom. Thanks Jill for the great idea about letting light in! We will frost the panes and of course remove the Tigger sticker

We managed to get most things done on the list, we added a few things and some things had to be postponed. Next week should be getting things back together, maybe not all the way, but maybe some tile or some floor!

  1. It is amazing how much has been done in one week and how much larger the space looks! Home Depot has some nice window adhesives for privacy, which come in different patterns. We used one on our front door side windows so Bella couldn’t see every and bark at every squirrel, leaf, dog, etc. Good luck with week 2!
