Euclid Street Airbnb Weeks &*#@%: We see the light!

We are closing in! Here is the status: We are in the finishing touches, I single handedly cleared a Wayfair warehouse, and I think I am ready to move in! Everything is coming together and almost dead on with the budget and we hope to be live in a few weeks!

Sliding door is up and rolling! There was barely enough room to fit the hardware, but the compact use of space makes the adjoining space much more functional.

Euclid Street Airbnb Reno Weeks 12-16… ish?

We have busy over here in Airbnb land. Here is what has happened in the past month:

We got a floor guy! We also returned our solid bamboo flooring for engineered click bamboo flooring (at his request). The price was very comparable and Yuri assured me the floating floor will do better in a Pennsylvania climate. Kasey and I have been checking things off the list that are nice to do when you have a floor that you do not have to be careful with. I splurged and got myself an orbital sander for refinishing floating shelves and the kitchen table I made (Kasey argued that it only invites more projects); I sanded and shellacked the kitchen shelves which are looking great. We also hung shelves, mirrors, towel hooks in the bathroom, updated a few electrical switches, hung a door to the basement, painted some left over things like door frames and added a new key button entry to the back door.

Before the floor could go down, it had to be leveled. We had a bit of a panic when the leveler started to seep under the wall and fill the utility room behind the tile wall. Yuri got it all fixed and I was very glad we let a professional take over. By the way, I also used shellac for the first time on these shelves and it was a glorious experience. I have used oils…while beautiful, they take days and days to dry and polyurethanes… which are fine but do create a plastic layer. It takes 15 minutes for this beetle excretion based coat to dry. Shellac… the solution for the impatient DIYers. FYI, it isn’t resistant to alcohol

Euclid Street Airbnb Reno Weeks 10 & 11

Oh whoa is the floor. Dramatic, surely?… I say….barely. Herein lies the problem: Lauren wants a bamboo floor. I am stubborn and so is the house. We spent a lot of time staring at a floor postulating potential quick fix solutions, all leading to a lot of work and potentially a failed state of a floor. It turns out a smooth floor does not mean a level floor and a level floor does not mean there aren’t waves. We have a deceptively smooth, un-level and wavy floor. The best kind….. for carpet. Fifteen people have told me to carpet it. I reaaallly don’t want to do this. I do not think carpet is a good solution for longevity with short term renting and I’m just not ready to concede.

Euclid Street Airbnb Reno Update Week 8 & 9

One skip and a hop away from floors! We have slowed down a bit, enjoyed the Thanksgiving holiday, took some time to realize how lucky we are. Deep breath. Okay let’s go. We painted a lot of pipes (it seems like they never end, so many pipes) finished up trim in the bathroom, added decorative trim on the shelving in the back room, finally fully assembled the floating shelves, dry-walled the stairwell, patched some other areas, scraped off the ancient vinyl daises off a window in the front (thank god for the heat gun), added pavers in the back yard to make a walkway, and painted the stairs going up. The good new is, I think we are done with big paint items! No more paint flecks on my glasses and false alarm white hairs. We gave the basement a good once over and got all of the tools organized and off the floor, getting it all prepped to lay down some bamboo. I also went through tax code for airbnb with my sis Alyss (conveniently an accountant) and she helped clarify the situation. I will try to post a summary on those as well (I’m sure you are all on the edge of your seat)

A few steps closer.. Kasey did a nice job with the stepping stones

Euclid Street Airbnb Week 7: A Working Bathroom!

Okay! Week 7, we are starting to get into the details and this week we really wanted to get the bathroom all put back together. Its official, we have a working toilet, shower, and sink! We are in the middle of casing/trimming the doorway and we do not have a mirror yet, but it actually feels like a bathroom. I got the handles and the sink put into the kitchen as well, but I am going to hold out on showing you all until my kitchen sink faucet comes in.

Welcome! Nothing like a few arborvitae to freshen the place up. We let mum loose on the back yard, looking great!
