Euclid Street Airbnb Week 6

Everything is coming together. We had more fun with tile along with some other odds and ends.

Here is what we did this week:

  • Grouting the kitchen wall
  • Painted the cabinet
  • First floating shelf was mocked up
  • Wall grout in bathroom
  • Bathroom floor tile and grout
  • Caulking the tile joint in the bathroom
  • Painted another door
  • Added a light going into the basement
  • Framed out around the top of the stairs, ready for wall board

Euclid Street Airbnb Week 5: Kitchen Tile and Lots of White Paint

Week 5, it should be the end. We would love it to be the end. Unfortunately, you cannot will the kitchen tile onto the walls. So! Nose to the grind stone and keep it going. We are pretty close to being done with tile. Just the bathroom floor to finish! Lots of white paint made its way to as many surfaces as we could manage. The basement factor makes this extra tricky, lots of pipes, nooks, funky edges and surfaces.

We had some unexpected bumps: rain on our concrete steps out back at the last hour and a cracked glass pane in the wine cellar door. But you just have to roll with the punches.

Euclid Street Airbnb Week 4: Bathroom Tile and a Million Small Jobs

Woof week 4 and we are definitely starting to feel the pain. Its never easy to feel like you keep adding to the list faster than you can cross it off. I feel like I live at home depot. This week kind of felt like we were running on a treadmill. We had every intention of going somewhere, and it sure felt like we ran a marathon, but we looked up and found ourselves in the same place that we started. Our turning point was getting most of the wall tile in the bathroom. This was a huge morale boost for us. Finally something going up, not coming down! The gleaming white tiles made a huge difference in the feel of the tiny bathroom. No more dingy Pittsburgh Toilet (For those of you aren’t yinzers, a Pittsburgh toilet it just a toilet and sink just chillin’ wide open in the basement so that people coming in from the steel mills and mines could clean up without getting the house dirty). It does feel like we are rounding a corner, hopefully next week will start to really show the end result.

Euclid Airbnb Week 2: Demo Days

Demo week is done! I think we got through it in good shape. We had only a few unwelcome discoveries. It looks like at one point in time the sink leaked and caused some water damage and mold. We decided to move the kitchen sink and remove the drywall behind it, just to play it safe. There is a silver lining though; To access the space better, Kasey took down the overhead cabinets and it turns out we really liked how it opened up the kitchen space. We decided we are going to tile the entire wall and do floating shelves in place of the over sink cabinets. The sink was also built out 4 inches to allow for cabinet space, so we will gain 4 inches of room back!

But wait! We’re not done yet! We had some more bad news in the bathroom. The 2x4s behind the tile in the shower were completely dry rotted at the base. We will have to replace them all. Luckily for us, they aren’t load bearing, they were just there to support the tile. Kasey redid some sketch wiring and had to take out a bathroom fan just blowing into the floor rafters.

While the demo discoveries definitely added to the list, to be honest, its exactly what we expected. You really just don’t know when you’re popping the lid off of things and you have to be flexible.
