Euclid Street Airbnb Reno Weeks 10 & 11

Oh whoa is the floor. Dramatic, surely?… I say….barely. Herein lies the problem: Lauren wants a bamboo floor. I am stubborn and so is the house. We spent a lot of time staring at a floor postulating potential quick fix solutions, all leading to a lot of work and potentially a failed state of a floor. It turns out a smooth floor does not mean a level floor and a level floor does not mean there aren’t waves. We have a deceptively smooth, un-level and wavy floor. The best kind….. for carpet. Fifteen people have told me to carpet it. I reaaallly don’t want to do this. I do not think carpet is a good solution for longevity with short term renting and I’m just not ready to concede.

We considered the stick down vinyl tiles. Kasey even bought a case to try out. This might work, but it feels cold and like a basement (worse than carpet?). I am also still open to the vinly snap together planks, but! You need a level floor for that as well… We did look into the different floor levelers, but our floor changes 5 inches from one side to the other and has a few large dips and bumps. We both agreed, It is time to bring in the big dogs. Sometimes you have to know when to call it. Can we figure out how to level a floor? Maybe, sure. Will our marriage survive it? Questionable. We have several people coming out to quote us some options.

Us ‘starting’ the floor. Typically you would start laying the planks using a line like this or a straight wall (You guessed it! No straight walls here). Because of the uneven floor it is likely that the boards will pull away in places and crack or pop when you walk on it if we were to lay it down as is.

This airbnb project is going to get us two things: 1. Additional revenue stream and 2. A nicely refinished basement. If we decide that we either do not need/want the additional revenue stream, or decide we truly are antisocial hermits, we still have a finished basement adding to the value of our home. With this being said, I am justifying some things (like paying extra for flooring solution we like).

While the floor was quite the anchor on our progress this week, we did manage to get some good work done. The show must go on!

The door before. Needs to be painted and we are expanding the tile landing.
Coat of paint on the door and a bigger tiled area. The tile is porcelain, but we were going for a slate look and the staggered square tiles helps to create that.
The ugly truth of reno. Crap builds up. We took some time to break down and clean up the weeks of trash.
No more trashy tree! The Marvelous Mrs. Maple.
We were able to fit all of our reno waste in a Bagster. This is a great easy way to deal with smaller reno garbage. You can buy the Bagster at home depot or at amazon (here is the link) for about $30. The pick-up is scheduled all online and is about $145. Couldn’t have been more convenient.
We hung the blinds in the kitchen and bedroom!
The new old door for the wine cellar! I like that you can look in and see the wine racks, but we will be able to lock it. Thanks Kevin for your help on framing! This door was fun, the one pictured here is actually the second door; I broke the glass on the first door struggling to strip 4 layers of lacquer, oil paint and latex paint (it had it all). Another example of knowing when to call it and start over. This door fits great and has character, I love it! I am still working out the door hardware, it might be good enough, but we’ll see.

  1. Hi. I think you can get a “skim coat” of concrete and have a professional to finish it (as level as it can get) – but how about one of those cool shiny finishes and natural colors that we see all over now? THEN get throw rugs – cheap oriental or kilim – that you can have cleaned now and again at Northside Carpet? that way you have something practical and flat to work with (and attractive) and have the comfort of RUGs (but one’s that can be cleaned)? BTW – your trash photo looks like much of our yard…
